Kajal Dochak of India took home the gold at the U20 World Championships in wrestling, while Shruti and Saarika took home bronze in the women’s division at Samokov in Bulgaria yesterday. The 17-year-old Haryana wrestler Kajal, the current Under-20 Asian champion, defeated Yuqi Liu of China 8–6 in a hard-fought 72kg final. In the women’s 53kg division, Saarika defeated Ilona Valchuk of Poland via technical superiority to earn bronze.
The 17-year-old Kajal, who came from a wrestling family in Lath village in the Sonipat district of Haryana, was inspired to wrestle by her uncle, former international wrestler Krishan Donchak. She used her strong defense to stop Yuqi’s last-minute comeback to win another gold medal for her Asian under-20 title in 76kg in July.
In just two months, Kajal, who alternates between 76 and 72 kilograms, has won two gold and two silver medals in Asian and international championships.
The Indian women’s team finished second with two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, behind Japan’s five gold and two bronze. Shruti (50 kg) and Saarika (53 kg) took home bronze.
