Re-sign Caleb Martin on three-year contract

Heat had only retained Martin’s non-bird rights this offseason, limiting his ability to raise him significantly after the 2021/22 season ended on a minimum wage contract. The terms reported by Chiang indicate that Miami will use the taxpayer part of its mid-level exception to re-sign Martin and ensure he receives a substantial salary.

Showing our breakdown of this season’s MLE values, the full taxpayer mid-level exception will have a three-year contract at around $ 20.4MM. Martin’s contract will be fully guaranteed, sources say Chiang (Twitter link).

This past season, Martin emerged as a key piece off the bench in Miami, shooting an average of 9.2 PPG and 3.8 RPG at .507 / .413 / .763 in 60 games (22.9 MPG), which earned him a promotion from his two-way contract. . He opted to simply convert his two-way contract into a rest-season contract instead of negotiating a multi-year contract, perhaps recognizing that he had a better chance of gaining offseason than in February.

Martin and his representatives were clever, as the $ 20.4MM Guaranteed Money reduces his career earnings so far. P.J. With Tucker moving to Philadelphia, 26-year-old Martin could be ready for a big role in the Heat in 2022/23.

As The Athletic’s John Hollinger (via Twitter) observes, Martin’s signing of a taxpayer mid-level exception means Miami will fill the rest of its roster with minimum-wage players in order to stay under the tax apron and maintain financial flexibility.
