T20 WC 2024: Sri Lanka Joins Bangladesh with Embarrassing Record in 19-Year T20I History

After chasing 125 runs, Bangladesh defeated their adversaries by 2 wickets in a low-scoring thriller at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The Lankan Lions were defeated by Bangladesh in their first-ever T20 World Cup match thanks to a close run chase that saw the veteran Mahmudullah maintain his composure.

After this loss, Sri Lanka have registered an embarrassing record in the 19-year-old history of T20I cricket. Sri Lanka have become the second team in T20Is to suffer 100 losses after Bangladesh (excluding tied games). The Lankan Lions have played 191 T20Is, winning 85 and losing 100. Four games have been tied ones, while two have been no-result encounters.

Most Defeats in Twenty20 Cricket:

1- Bangladesh: 100 defeats in 170 games

2 – Sri Lanka: 191 games played, 100 losses

3 – West Indies: 196 games, 99 losses

4 – Zimbabwe: 95 defeats in 145 games

5-New Zealand: 91 defeats in 217 games

In the current tournament edition, the Lankan Lions have now lost two straight games. Prior to losing to the Bangla Tigers, they initially lost their inaugural match against South Africa at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Sri Lanka scored 124/9 in multiple-phase innings against Bangladesh. Despite the lack of influence from Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka guided his team to a commanding start. Before faltering in the middle overs, Wanindu Hasaranga’s team was at 64/2 after the first eight overs. In the last six overs, they managed to add just 24 runs, and from overs 6-14, only 52 runs.

Bangladesh faced an extremely difficult pursuit. After losing Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Hasan in the first two overs, Litton Das pulled off a comeback. The wicketkeeper batsman scored 36 off of 38 balls, but Towhid Hridoy’s explosive 40 off of 20 balls was particularly impressive. The Bangla Tigers were able to get near thanks to his three straight sixes in a pressure-filled situation in the 12th over, but there appeared to be a twist in the story that cost them wickets at the end. However, with a calm 13-ball 16, Mahmudullah put the Bangla Tigers out of the game.
