Copa America Femenina 2025: Argentina’s hopes of making it to their fifth Copa America Femenina final may have been dashed by Colombia, but they were given a postponement on Friday and defeated Uruguay in Quito to take third place.
Argentina lost the semi-final on penalties, but this time it came out on the other side of the score, defeating Uruguay 5–4. The Argentines ended up third in subsequent tournaments as a result of the outcome.
Esperanza equalized the score 11 minutes after Aldana Cometti gave Argentina the lead in the twenty-fourth minute. Juliana Viera gave Uruguay the lead just before halftime and put the Argentines behind them.
“I think they have surpassed my dream. This team leaves the Copa América undefeated, and that is a source of pride,” Germán Portanova, Argentina’s head coach, said after the match.
“Uruguay is a team that competes very well. It was a close match; we knew it was going to be really tough.”
Uruguay gave up a penalty with roughly ten minutes remaining until the end of the game, just when it appeared like they would win—it would have been their joint-best finish since 2006.
Nothing stood between the two teams in extra time, therefore the game went to penalty kicks after Florencia Bonsegundo scored from the penalty spot.
Stephanie Lacoste’s miss for Uruguay in the fourth round of kicks gave the Albiceleste a hard-fought victory, while Argentina converted all of its penalties.
