WTA Canadian Open: Iga Swiatek easily defeated Eva Lys in straight sets to secure her spot in the Canadian Open’s round of 16. In one hour and twelve minutes, Swiatek won 6-2 6-2 in her first tournament since her first Wimbledon victory last month.
Swiatek has only lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova in Miami last season, and she has won 18 of her previous 19 Round of 16 matches at WTA 1000 events. In their first match since 2022, Swiatek will take on No. 16 seed Clara Tauson in the Round of 16. She has won both of their previous meetings, and she will try to continue that run as they compete for a trip to the Montreal quarterfinals.
After the Dane defeated Yulia Starodubtseva in her third-round match, the second seed will face Clara Tauson for a spot in the quarterfinals.
A break in the first game of the match gave Swiatek the early advantage in double quick time, laying the groundwork for her eventual victory.
After failing to return a strong cross-court forehand, she then overcame Lys’ service in the second set, gaining a 4-0 lead that she turned into victory.
In another match, Amanda Anisimova defeated Emma Raducanu in Montreal, continuing her recovery from her devastating loss to Swiatek in the SW19 main event.
At the third try, Anisimova, who had lost to Swiatek 6-0 6-0 at the All England Club, easily defeated Raducanu 6-2 6-1 to win her first match.
The Ukrainian easily defeated Anna Kalinskaya 6-1 6-1, and she will now play Elina Svitolina in the fourth round.
