US Open 2025: Ayush Shetty defeated Canada’s Brian Yang 21-18, 21-13 in the US Open final on Sunday in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to secure his first BWF World Tour victory.
But the 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma lost to the top-seeded American Beiwen Zhang 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in 46 minutes, as she went down fighting in her first World Tour final.
In other news, Ayush finished an outstanding week that included a comeback victory over top seed Chou Tien Chen in the quarterfinals. On Sunday, the 2023 junior World championships bronze winner overcame the Canadian shuttler in 47 minutes.
Shetty vs Yang
Scores in the men’s singles final were deadlocked at 6-6 at the start, but fourth seed Shetty jumped ahead with a run of victories to take an 11-6 lead at the half.
Yang pulled within 13-11 and tied the score at 16-16, but Shetty recovered with a series of well-placed shots to win the first game with a clear jump smash.
The Mangalore shuttler quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second game before Yang momentarily came up. However, the Indian player remained composed, combining clever defense and a variety of tactics to hold his opponent at bay.
Shetty, who was ahead 17–12, ended the match with a strong smash and a cross-court punch to win his first World Tour title.
In addition to qualifying for the 2023 Bahrain International and 2024 Dutch Open summit battle, Shetty advanced to the finals of the 2023 Odisha Masters Super 100 tournament.
Tanvi became the youngest Indian to ever make it to a final on the BWF World Tour, despite losing to World No. 21 Zhang, who was eighteen years her senior, at the last hurdle.
World number 66 Tanvi, a member of the Indian squad that won the Asian Team Championships the previous year, shocked second-seeded Vietnamese player Nguyen Thuy Linh in the first round with scores of 21-19, 21-9. She defeated Pitchamon Opatniputh, a former junior world champion from Thailand, 21-18, 21-16 in the second round. The Indian defeated Karupathevan Letshanaa 21-13, 21-6 to get to the semifinals, where she defeated seventh-seeded Polina Buhrova of Ukraine 21-14, 21-16.
