Nicholas Pooran a batsman and wicketkeeper for the West Indies, announced on Monday that he is retiring from international cricket at the young age of 29.
Pooran became one of the best white-ball players in the Caribbean after making his debut for his country in 2016. He scored over 4,200 runs in 106 T20Is and 61 ODIs, including multiple game-winning performances. In T20Is, he briefly led the team as captain as well.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) also thanked Pooran for his contributions to the national team in a statement. “Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career.”
In recent years, a growing number of cricket players have given up playing for their country to focus solely on their franchise. In their prime, a few of these athletes made the decision to hang up their boots. The most recent example is Pooran, who has also represented the West Indies internationally.
His final Twenty20 International was against Bangladesh in Kingstown last year, while his last One-Day International was against Sri Lanka in Harare in 2023.
Due to his responsibilities with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2025 Indian Premier League, the batter has asked to be rested for both the current England series and the forthcoming Ireland series.
Pooran had his best-ever IPL 2025 batting season with LSG, with 524 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of nearly 200 and an average of over 40.
