Tahoe Ski Resort Drop Named ‘Offensive and Offensive’ Squaw Valley

The president of the tribal council said, “Many have worked for decades.”

The famous Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, California is changing its name to “Palisades Tahoe” by changing its name to “offensive and offensive,” the company said in a statement Monday.

The resort, which hosted the 1960 Winter Winter Olympics, has been given a controversial name – a statement that has been labeled “racist and sexist” by indigenous women for two years.

“At the end of the day,‘ squaw ’is an hurtful word and we are not the people who hurt,” Resort President de Bern said in her statement. “It simply came to our notice then. We have a good income as a progressive resort … and progress cannot be made without change. ”

It was “the right thing to do, and I think it will make a difference. I think we are seen as a more welcoming, inclusive resort and community, ”she said.

The resort is located 200 miles northeast of San Francisco in the Olympic Valley, which was known as Squaw Valley until the 1960 Winter Olympics.

The resort’s logo is also being changed to an eagle’s head. The new name and logo will also include its partner ski resort, formerly known as Alpine Meadows.

The heads of the councils of the Washo Tribes of Nevada and California expressed “great appreciation” for the “positive step.”

“Washo people have been living in this area for thousands of years; We have a lot of respect for our ancestors, for our history and for our lands, “President Serel Smoky said in a statement. “We are very happy with this decision; Today is a day that many have worked for decades. ”

The ski resort came up with a new name in consultation with the tribe over the past year. Palisades is a series of peaks in central Sierra Nevada, where the resort is located.

The company says it will resume branding to remove the old name. All gears with the “Squaw” logo have been removed from retail stores and the names on the signs are being changed. But the resort asked for restraint because old names and logos appear in “thousands of places in the resort”.

Most of the “public-viewer signs … will be removed by the start of this year’s ski season,” the company said in a statement, “but we hope it will take several seasons before they can be completely replaced.”

Palisades Tahoe Lake Tahoe is the largest ski resort in the region, with about 6,000 skiable acres in two mountains.
