Will FC Barcelona win their third treble this year?

As we head into the last International break of the season, let us review how FC Barcelona performed so far and what their progress is in each competition that they are involved.

Before the start of the season expectations were obviously high on FC Barcelona winning the season but there were considerable threats looming within the organisation and the league itself. The loss of Ronaldo and Zidane from Real Madrid meant that Barcelona were starting with an advantage, but Atletico Madrid made some considerable signings that weren’t to be taken lightly. The summer transfer market 2018/19 saw the exit of club legend Andres Iniesta which left a big gap to fill in the midfield.

Barcelona started investing heavily into youngsters this season, showcasing the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Philip Coutinho and soon to arrive Frenkie de Jong, to replace the loss of Xavi and Iniesta. Age was a point of concern for FCB as most of their starting 11 are in their 30’s and word of retirement is buzzing around them.

So lets look at their progress so far in the season-

  1. La liga- FC Barcelona is at the top of the table, 10 points clear of Atletico Madrid who’s 2ndat the moment. With 10 games to go, it seems like their cup to lift with momentum helping barca keep the title race alive. Lionel Messi is the top scorer with 29 goals in 26 matches followed by Luis Suarez at 18 goals in 27 matches.
  • Copa del Rey- FC Barcelona is into the finals beating long term rivals Real Madrid 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabau. They are to face Valencia CF in the finals and are heavy favourites to lift the cup.
  • UEFA Champions League- FC Barcelona beat Olympique Lyon to secure a spot into the quarter finals of the competition. This is the only competition that poses considerable threat to the treble chances as they have 5 games for the finals and all the teams still involved are high calibre clubs who could beat FCB on a good day.
